We are looking forward to performing this programme of delightful music by Henry Purcell for you on Saturday 12th July at St John's Church Knoyle Rd. We will be accompanied by the Baroque Players - a string quartet with organ/harpsicord.

The concert will last 90 minutes with an interval of 25 mins.
Doors open at 6.30pm and the concert will start at 7.30pm.

Disabled level access is via the stage door in Knoyle Rd.

During the first half we will perform Purcell's coronation anthem 'My heart is inditing'; 'Hear my prayer, O Lord' and the string quartet will be playing the Purcell: Chacony in G minor.
In the second half we will perform "Dido and Aeneas".

Dido and Aeneas is the only true opera that Purcell wrote and ends with the famous 'Dido's Lament'. It is based on book IV of Virgil's Aeneid and tells of the tragic tale of Dido, Queen of Carthage's love for The Trojan hero Aeneas.
Purcell wrote 'My heart is inditing' for the coronation of King James II in 1685 to accompany the coronation of his Queen.
Hear my prayer, O Lord is an eight part choral anthem written in 1682. It is thought that Purcell originally intended it to be a much longer work.
Purcell composed the Chacony in G minor in about 1680, probably to be played by the Twenty-Four Violins - the string orchestra founded by Charles II and inspired by the ensemble set up by Louis XIV at Versailles. It was most likely written as dance music.

Our soloists for Dido and Aeneas are:

    Dido ; Thalie Knights
    Aeneas: Andrew Robinson
    Belinda: Danni O'Neill
    Sorceress: Briony Lambert

Refreshments of wine and soft drinks will be available to buy before the concert and during the interval.

Brighton Orpheus Choir looks forward to welcoming you to our concert.
