Join Us

If you love choral music and are committed to working towards and singing in a concert every term why not apply to join our friendly, inclusive, non-religious choir.
Our new term begins on Wednesday 17th September and we will be rehearsing Handel: Messiah for a concert on 6th December.

There will be an Open Rehearsal Wednesday 24th September, so don't be shy - come along and meet us!

Rehearsals take place 7.30pm Wednesdays, at the Friends Meeting House, Ship Street, Brighton.

The Friends Meeting House is ideally placed near all the major bus routes. Brighton Station is a short walk away and some choir members do car shares to spread the cost of parking.

All rooms on the ground floor of the Friends Meeting House are wheelchair accessible.

Auditions

Brighton Orpheus Choir is an auditioned group. This means you are required to have a short voice test with our Music Director before being admitted to the choir. This is typically arranged via Hilary Brown a week or two after your first rehearsal with us.

The principal purpose of the voice test is for the Music Director (Nick) to determine your vocal suitability for joining the choir and the voice part most suited to your vocal range.

In the audition, Nick will ask you to sing a few scales to warm up your voice and also to explore your vocal range. Then you are asked to sing 'Fairest Isle' by Purcell.

Auditionees are asked to learn the song 'Fairest Isle' by Purcell. This is in G major for Sopranos or Tenors, and a 3rd lower in E major for Alto or Bass singers. Please download the appropriate version. (PDF's TO GO HERE)

We have recorded this song in both keys to help you learn it. There are 2 recordings of both versions, one with a singer, and one with just the piano accompaniment. When you are confident you know the melody, try singing it with just the piano accompaniment - which is how you will sing it in the audition.

Many other auditioned choirs require you to sight-read a piece of music. We don’t, as we wish to maintain a balance between attracting and retaining good singers as well as being a choir for all musical abilities.
