A new production for 2009.  Purcell’s joyous response to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, incorporates of Shakespeare’s text into a fascinating carnival of music, theatre and dance.   It becomes a series of fantastical masques, culminating in a lavish wedding ceremony. The original production called for such staggering scenic effects that the cost of the sets and costumes almost bankrupted Purcell's theatre. Sung in English with supertitles.

Trio Mediæval and Vivaldi's Women

Ballads, Hymns and Lullabies
- traditional songs from Norway and England
the voices of Oslo's Trio Mediæval have won audiences around the world with their performances and recordings of a diverse polyphonic repertoire, featuring mediæval music from England and France, contemporary works written specifically for the ensemble, and traditional Norwegian ballads and songs.

Vivaldi's Women is a unique all-female choir and orchestra inspired by the music and history of the famous 18th-century Foundling Hospital in Venice - the Ospedale della Pietà - where Vivaldi taught and composed. Their programme will comprise a selection of Pietà repertoire including the composer’s much-loved Gloria.

Geoff Aitchison

Ashigs from Eastern Azerbaijan
The art of ashigs is an ancient bardic tradition that belongs mostly to the old Turkic World (Central Asia, Iran, Turkey, Caucasus and North-west China). An ashig is a poet, composer, singer, musical performer and occasionally dancer, who beats on the strings of the saz and improvises serenades and ballads. The tradition of Azerbaijani ashigs dates back to at least the 14th Century.
