| The Sinfonia of Arun was formed in 1982 originally
consisting of local players as a 'house' orchestra for Arun Choral Society based in
Arundel Cathedral. Receiving excellent reviews, it has now developed into one of the
South's leading orchestras drawing upon many leading orchestral players from the South of
England. The orchestra now performs in many different venues, with various choral
societies and on occasions produces its own series of orchestral concerts. It has
worked regularly with the Brighton Orpheus Choir for some years. The orchestra's first Musical Director was John Atkins, conductor of Arun Choral Society, and when he retired Jonathan Grieves Smith, conductor of Brighton Festival Chorus, was its Principal Conductor until 1999. The orchestra has played with many leading soloists including Hugh Bean, Katharine Adams, Michala Petri and Christopher Warren Green who gave a memorable performance of Vaughan Williams Lark Ascending. The orchestra performs a wide range of music from Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Strauss, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Walton to Stephanie Cant's Variations on Kate's Theme with Michala Petri as the recorder soloists. The Sinfonia also performs as a chamber ensemble from string quartets to larger ensembles performing works such as Mozart's Serenade for Thirteen Wind Instruments. |
