Based on the biblical story of a victorious battle with the disastrous personal consequences of a rash vow, this most human, dramatic of oratorios was to be Handel's last, beset as he was by diminishing eye-sight. Vowing to sacrifice the first creature he meets on his return from victory, coming joyfully to greet Jephtha is his only child, his beloved daughter, Iphis..... Handel's vast experience of dramatic solo and choral writing for stage and church climaxes here in a work of great joy and pathos in some of the finest and most moving of his writing for the human voice.
